Tinnitus Evaluation and Treatment

Tinnitus affects approximately 30 million Americans with some 13 million reporting tinnitus without hearing loss. Generally, the prevalence of tinnitus is associated with degree of hearing loss. Augusta Audiology is committed to helping our patients manage their tinnitus by guiding them through available options.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus, or the sensation of hearing sounds internally when no such sound is present in the outside environment, is often reported as ringing, buzzing, or chirping in the ear(s). It currently affects approximately 50 million people in the United States.

What are the Causes?

A common cause of tinnitus is hearing loss or damage to tiny hair cells in the inner ear. Tinnitus can be exacerbated by loud noise exposure, increased stress levels, alcohol and caffeine consumption, and diets high in sodium.

Treatment

There is currently no immediate cure for tinnitus; however patients can often see improvement in their symptoms with the appropriate use of hearing aids. The professionals at Augusta Audiology Associates counsel patients to better understand tinnitus and help determine which hearing aids and/or other solutions would be appropriate for their lifestyle.
